Exploring Drawing: Line, tone, space and mark making

This is a 5 week course at Putney Library, ideal for those with little or no drawing experience or those who have drawn before bit would like to brush up their skills.

What The Course is About:

We will visit the basic elements of drawing: line, tone, space and mark making. You will be introduced to a variety of drawing materials starting with pencil and moving onto charcoal and ink. You will explore the possibilities of drawing through a series of practical observation based activities introduced via tutor demonstrations. In addition, we will look at and discuss examples of drawing by a variety of artists through slides.

Materials Required:

An A3 spiral bound sketchbook, pencils of different grades, willow charcoal, an eraser (not a puttey rubber), white chalk, Black ink, a small brush and a drawing pen (the school shop sells a brush and pen in one). A can of fixative or hairspray.

Previous Experience:

Ideal for those with little or no drawing experience or those who have drawn before bit would like to brush up their skills.

End of course:

What will I achieve? You will learn the basic principles of observational drawing together with the ability to use different drawing media in relation to tone, line, space and mark making. You will develop an understanding how these elements in fact overlap and come together to create the language of drawing.
