Drawing from Direct Observation

This course aims to develop your observational skills, so you will be able to be in control of your drawing and not just hoping that they will show what you have been looking at.

What The Course is About:

We will examine structural relationships and see how the different forms and objects relate to and interrupt each other and the space they occupy.

We will examine comparative tonal values and relationships to show how they create volume, form and contrast.

Using pastels we will work with colour and see how colour mixing is informed by colour theory, and how to see the difference between local and tonal colour.

We will use collage to both use as a way of drawing with physical shapes and how to experiment with moving them around to create structural and tonal relationships. Also using collage inspired by Matisse’s cut outs to create work that is visually pleasing where the content or subject matter is driven by experimenting with the process rather than fitting the process to a preconceived idea.
