Short Courses

Putney School of Art and Design offer short courses to those wanting to experiment with multiple methods of art. Our unique offerings allow creativity to flow and open up a new world of creativity. Our availability is very limited so if there is something you like the look of below, please give us a ring on 020 3959 0110 or email us at psad@enablelc.org.

While our term courses are 6 – 12 weeks long, we offer short courses for those who are only available for part of the term. Our evening classes are pay as you go which allows even more flexibility with our creative sessions, offering a one off session for those who want to try a class before fully committing.

Short Weekday Courses

Watercolour for Beginners

Mondays | 10am

This course is ideal for beginners who want to learn the essential techniques and approaches of watercolour painting, and to develop skills in using this exciting medium. You will be tutored in the basic skills and techniques of watercolour.

Figurative Art (all levels)

Mondays | 2pm

The course will cover various aspects of working with a life model, including life drawing and painting, portrait drawing and painting, creating compositions inspired by contemporary artists, with the tutor explaining key observational skills.

Portrait Drawing & Painting (all levels)

Mondays | 6:45pm

Portraiture is an art form involving observational, interpretive and expressive skills. Students will be taught how to learn and master these skills while drawing and painting from the model.

Lino Printing (all levels)

Wednesdays | 6:45pm

A  print workshop where you will learn essential skills in lino cutting and printing. With an experienced printmaker guiding you through carving and printing your own block print using a relief press or hand-printing techniques.

Painting Open Studio (Advanced)

Thursdays | 2:30pm

This course is for experienced painting students wanting to work independently or develop ideas, with support and advice from an experienced tutor. The course gives you time to develop your own painting projects.

Oil Painting (Intermediate Level)

Thursdays | 6:45pm

This is a practical and ideas-based course. You will learn with the help of tutor demonstrations, groups discussion and individual tutorial guidance. Each project will combine technical explorations with a development of your own style.

Introduction to Drawing & Painting

Thursdays | 6:45pm

this course is suitable for beginners and also for students with some experience who would welcome a structured refresher course. In three projects we will cover the basics of tone, space, colour working mainly from studio set-ups.

Portrait Drawing (all levels)

Thursdays | 6:45pm

This drawing course is ideal for those with some drawing experience who want to concentrate on portraiture, or who are already doing portraiture. The emphasis of the course will be on structure, and ways of understanding and describing portraiture.

Print Making Etching (all levels)

Thursdays |6:45pm

Etching is an artistic discipline by which images can be created on metal using a variety of different processes, including the use of acid, then printed onto specialized printmaking papers.

Pottery Open Studio 

Wednesdays | 4:15pm

This course is aimed at anyone interested in pottery. Experienced potters will be able to work on their own projects while beginners will be introduced to pottery techniques.

Short Weekend Courses

Life Drawing (all levels)

Saturdays | 10am

The Life Drawing pay as you go course is open to both beginners and experienced student alike. The emphasis will be on observation, building upon basic principles of drawing and moving towards personal expression through experimentation with various media and techniques, while viewing other students work.

Portrait Drawing & Painting (all levels)

Saturdays | 1:30pm

Portraiture is an art form involving observational, interpretive and expressive skills while trying to capture the ‘essence’ of another human being. Students will be taught how to learn and master these skills while drawing and painting from the model.

Screenprinting (all levels)

Saturday | 1:30pm

Screenprinting is a method of making an image using stencils. These are attached to a mesh that is stretched over a frame. Using a squeegee, ink is pulled through the stencil to create an image. Screenprinting as a process is intrinsic to graphics, advertising and packaging, owing to its versatility of scale, colour and ease.
