What The Course is About:

Drawing into Painting is a journey from the energy of the sketchbook or paper to the expressive potential of paint on canvas or board. We'll explore how drawing serves as the skeleton for a painting, from initial gesture and composition to the final layers of colour. The class guides you through the essential connections between line, structure and mark making through to brush mark and colour.

We'll start with various drawing exercises to sharpen your observational skills and understanding of composition, then translate these concepts into compelling paintings.

Relevant examples of work from both historic and contemporary artists will be explored and discussed.

Materials Required:

A range of drawing media including Pencils, charcoal, black ink and markers pens.

We will be painting with water based media – Acrylics, Water based oils and colour inks.

Previous Experience:

All Levels

End of course:

You will be able to:

  • Use a range of drawn studies and media as an aid to preparing for a painting.
  • Combine drawing and painting approaches to produce developed pieces of work.
  • Understand how drawing and painting can facilitate the development of a personal creative process.
