What The Course is About:

What is the class about?

If you haven’t painted in a long while or need time to build on a basic knowledge the class will give you a structured way in. The underlaying premise is that being able to draw helps and informs what we do in painting, thus about 30% time is spent on drawing and 70% on painting. We will be painting mainly with oils although acrylics are sometimes used too.

Structure: each term has a different focus although underlaying approaches will be similar. We will look at slides of other artists work and use group discussions as a chance to reflect on work produced in a supportive environment.

The first class of each term is always drawing based.

Autumn term: light & dark

Looking at tonal approaches in different ways.

Spring term: Colour

Working with aspects of colour through practical excercises.

Summer term: Composition & space

A chance to work on longer paintings and draw on location.

Materials Required:

Charcoal & pencils for the first session of each term, plus an A4 sketchbook. A full materials list will be available from the first session.
