Nelson Diplexcito is a painter and drawer who has shown in exhibitions and galleries both nationally and internationally. Nelson has taught at many institutions including, Loughborough University School of Art and Design, Grays School of Art and Design, Wimbledon College of Art and is currently a Senior Lecturer at Camberwell College of Art. Nelson has also been a Visiting Professor at the Gothenborg Folkhögskola and has also been a visiting artist on the Turps Banana programme in London. Nelson was a student on the BA Fine Art Painting programme at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen (1984-1988) and completed his MA in painting at The Royal College of Art in 1990. In 1990, Nelson was awarded a Boise Travelling Scholarship to Germany and later took up an arts residency in America in 1993, organised by The Royal College of Art. He has a dedicated studio practice which he has maintained since graduation and his work is concerned with the place of figurative painting in contemporary practice and in particular portraiture. His paintings challenge the impermanence of moments, to bring what is hidden and unseen and to call it into the open, in short to make it visible. As well as being interested in the daily practice of painting and drawing, it is its historical background that deeply influences him and his lecture specialisms include: A Venetian Approach to Painting, Velázquez and the Spanish Baroque, The Technical Narrative of Indirect and Direct Painting and the influence of Gestalt Theory in Painting. In 2023 the first monograph of his work, Nelson Diplexcito: Orpheus Street Paintings was launched at TM Gallery in London and in 2024 he was invited to be on judging panel of the Beep Painting Prize in association with the Elysium Gallery.
