SHORT DRAWING COURSE IN GALLERIES & MUSEUMS
The premise of these courses is that focused drawing is a great way of starting to learn and discover some of the treasures of our London galleries and museums.
What The Course is About:
(six weeks)
The premise of these courses is that focused drawing is a great way of starting to learn and discover some of the treasures of our London galleries and museums.
As well as the possibilities of drawing. You will learn something of the history of paintings or objects you are drawing, also examining aspects their symbolism, relationship to various art movements and their visual dynamics.
You will be encouraged to effectively utilize a portable and restricted drawing toolkit (e.g., pencils, a single pen and small sketchbook) to accurately capture the essential form, line, shape and colour and fundamental tonal value shifts of a chosen object (painting, sculpture or artifact).
The first session each term will be at PSAD and will include preparatory drawing exercises and slides
Programme for 2025-26
- Autumn term: Drawing in the V&A Museum.
- Spring term: Drawing in Tate Britain
- Summer Term: Drawing in Tate Modern

Materials Required:
Any materials you have, bring to the first session. A full materials list will be provided before the first session.

Previous Experience:
The courses are suitable for both experienced students and those just beginning their drawing journeys.
End of course:
You will learn:
1. Visual Analysis and Composition
You will be able to analyse the formal elements of artworks by using observational drawing techniques to study composition, form, tone colour and spatial relationships on sketchbook pages.
2. Contextual Drawing and Historical Connection
Through selectively sketching details from museum exhibits (such as architectural elements, decorative arts, or paintings ) you will be able to connect these observed details to their original historical context, function, or material process, thereby enriching your drawing practice with art-historical knowledge.
