Oct Half Term – Oil Painting Masterclass

This intermediate to advanced oil painting course offers the opportunity for you to develop your personal painting style.

What The Course is About:

This oil painting masterclass aims to develop your personal painting style and increase your confidence. We will develop and hone your key observational skills, giving you the confidence to draw with paint and develop your brush work , handling and weight of touch. Understand the importance of composition and test out compositional possibilities . See how colour theory informs your colour mixing, and the importance of tonal values, hue and saturation/intensity. We will be painting from direct observation, as well as looking at good artist role models, including old masters and contemporary artists, by making transcriptions, analysing and deconstructing their work to get an insight into their thought processes and approach to making paintings and see how that can in form and help develop their own individual voice. We will create and develop paintings from a range of source materials , using drawings and photographic references.

Materials Required:

What to bring to the first session: Drawing materials, pencils, putty rubber, oil pastels. Oil paints, titanium white, yellow ochre, burnt umber, burnt sienna, Indian red, cadmium yellow lemon yellow, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, magenta, veridian green. Zest it for brush cleaning, linseed oil ( optional), a range of bristle brushes including flat , round and filbert , and one house painting brush. A small pointed synthetic brush, palette knives, masking tape. Surfaces to paint on including canvasses, canvass paper and primed boards. A palette or grease proof paper or a block or tare off palettes. Rag for cleaning brushes and a small jar for cleaning agent.

End of course:

What will I achieve? You will be able to paint with more confidence, have an appreciation of the importance of composition, observational skills, tonal values, colour mixing informed by colour theory. Brush handling weight of touch and an understanding of finding the right balance of tension and release. You will be able to develop a finished painting from a range of visual information and references.
