Expressive Drawing & Experimental Techniques
This is an exciting NEW course, covering various aspects of drawing, gesture and mark-making to strengthen your drawing and/ or painting skills. Students will learn by experimentation and sense of play to unlock your creativity.
What The Course is About:
The course will cover various aspects of expressive drawing, image-making, collage and print, through a range of materials and techniques. It will help you to expand your artistic vocabulary and to give you the opportunity to develop your own contemporary practice.
The first half of the course will cover the exploration of drawing and mark-making materials, and in the second half of the term you will experiment with different techniques, including printmaking. The aim of this course is to help guide you to a practical understanding of how drawing, collecting and observation can develop into printmaking processes and imagery.
For the first six weeks with PSAD tutor Jane Millar you will be exploring drawing techniques in different black and white and colour materials, including ink and collage. You will be working from a visually exciting table-top still life inspired by the paintings of Elizabeth Blackadder, early David Hockney and painter Hurvin Anderson. You are invited to add your own objects and images to this, to personalise your drawings, as the six weeks progress.
Materials Required:
For the first week you will need to bring a soft pencil (4B or 6B), plus a soft graphite stick. You will also need a can of fixative or hairspray, a hard eraser, and about 4 sheets of A2 paper. All these items can be bought inexpensively in the well-stocked shop at PSAD, which opens at 6.15pm.
Previous Experience:
This course is for students with some experience and/ or an interest in trying different processes and materials.
End of course:
This class offers students the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and approaches to the use of different traditional and non-traditional drawing media. The course will guide students through the practice and principles of essential formal drawing qualities: line, tone, texture, composition and colour. Some sessions will involve paint, printing, collage, and more, allowing you to expand your artistic vocabulary.
