Draw & Paint with Mixed Media

The course explores contemporary techniques in drawing, painting and mixed media using acrylic paint and a range of different drawing materials and surfaces.

What The Course is About:

Develop drawing and painting techniques using a variety of mediums to create your own series of expressive drawings and paintings. You will work with acrylic paint, charcoal, graphite, ink, pastels, collage plus other materials. Taking inspiration from contemporary artists, you will learn about composition, mark making, tone and colour and gain confidence to explore this in your own work. The course will start with drawing and lead into painting. There will be a focus on different materials and subject each week, or every couple of weeks, concluding with 3 weeks to spend time working on a final piece. The tutor sets a different theme to explore each term. In autumn we look at 'myth - making' - creating an impactful visual story through subject and composition. Your tutor will demonstrate techniques throughout.

Materials Required:

What to bring to the first session: Please bring black ink, kitchen roll, charcoal sticks in mixed sizes, soft pencil or graphite stick (at least 4B), white conte, black and white acrylic paint, brushes in a variety of sizes and a palette. Roll of masking tape and two pieces of heritage cartridge paper or water colour paper A3 or A2 size.

What will I achieve? You will explore the basic principles of observational drawing, and be shown how to interpret visual information. During the course you will learn mixed media and mark making techniques and paint from a variety of subject matter. The aim of the course is to help you develop your skill and confidence as a painter, help you to expand your drawing skills, while taking inspiration from examples by contemporary artists. It is suitable for any students wanting to push existing skills as well as for beginners.
