Summer School – Mixed Media: Acrylic & Water Mixable Oils

Whether you’re new to painting or exploring new methods in your practice, this class is for you.

What The Course is About:

Whether you're new to painting or exploring new methods in your practice, this class is for you. The course begins with a review of colour theory as it relates to layering, mixing and glazing paint. Next, we will learn how to get the most out of acrylic paints by these same methods and adding mediums. Acrylic is a great way to paint fast and loose and can also be used as a base for oil painting. After exploring how to get the most of acrylics, we will add the use of oil paint to create a painting using both.

Materials Required:

Materials Required: 1) A variety of surfaces - for example canvas or painting board depending on your preferences of size and quality. There is oil sketch paper available in the school shop. 2) Various palette knives - various sizes and shapes. 3) Synthetic brushes for acrylic and and any oil brushes you want to bring. 4) Low odour spirits or “Zest” for cleaning brushes. (No need for this if using water mixable oils) 5) Paper towels or rags as needed. 6) A painting palette or palette paper.

Paints: We will be using Acrylic paints for a base because of their fast drying qualities. There is no need to bring a full palette as they can be mixed. Please bring the basic palette colours seen below: BASIC PALETTE Cadmium Red medium, Primary Yellow (Cad Yellow medium) Primary Blue (Cobalt , Ultramarine or Pthalo) & Titanium White Other Acrylic colours if you have them. You can buy a small box of colours from the student store.

OIL PAINTS: We will be using oils for the finished product so a larger palette is required. For best results, please repeat the entire list of colours seen above. Bring any other colours you would like to work with. Also Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna/ Umber and Alizarin Crimson if you have them.

Water Mixable Oil Paint: If you would like to substitute water mixable oil paint please bring them instead of oil paint. They are fully washable and use water instead of solvents for washing up as well as painting.

Previous Experience:

All Levels - Beginners to painting are welcome, but some drawing experience will help you to get more form this course.

End of course:

What will I achieve? You will learn to use a range of mixed media techniques with Oils and Acrylic Paints. You will have the opportunity to create quick studies and finished art works.
