Summer School – 2 Days: Pottery – Throwing Altered Forms
This course is aimed at anyone interested in clay and pottery, especially throwing or developing unique sculptural work.
What The Course is About:
The course will focus on throwing and altering forms. You will learn techniques to transform wheel-thrown cylinders and bowls into unique, asymmetrical, or complex shapes through techniques such as faceting, texturing, darting and combining techniques. This course offers a unique opportunity to expand your pottery and creative skills. You’ll leave with new techniques, and a deeper connection to your artistic practice.
Materials Required:
For the first lesson please bring a notebook / sketchbook and something to write with; a digital camera or camera phone is useful to record of your work. Basic hand tools can be bought from the school shop but there are also some communal tools available to start with. Materials such as clay, slips and glazes are provided and a charge is made based on the weight of your work prior to firing. You will also need a suitable waterproof apron.
Previous Experience:
Students with some experience of throwing to benefit fully from the course.
End of course:
What will I achieve?
By the end of the course you will understand - Form Development: Moving beyond symmetrical, round pots to create sculptural or organic shapes, to create unique pieces, altered with enhanced surface decoration techniques such as slip decorating, faceting, texturing and combined techniques.
You will need to attend open studio sessions to complete the glazing once fired.
