Oct Half Term – 2 Days: Pottery for Young People 13-17 years

Get creative with clay and discover the fun of making your own pottery! Whether you are completely new to ceramics or already have some experience, this course is a chance to experiment, learn new skills and develop your own ideas.

What The Course is About:

Get creative with clay and discover the fun of making your own pottery! Whether you are completely new to ceramics or already have some experience, this course is a chance to experiment, learn new skills and develop your own ideas. Beginners will be introduced to a range of pottery techniques, including throwing on the wheel and handbuilding. Learn how to shape, build and decorate your own pieces while exploring different forms and creative possibilities. They will learn the basics and good studio practices, while those with previous experience can develop their skills and work on their own projects. Suitable for all experience levels.

Materials Required:

For the first lesson please bring a notebook / sketchbook and something to write with; a digital camera or camera phone is useful to record of your work. Basic hand tools can be bought from the school shop but there are also some communal tools available to start with. Materials supplied at no extra charge but please bring an apron or an old shirt.

Previous Experience:

Suitable for all levels.

End of course:

What will I achieve? The courses will cover all the basic construction techniques: Pinching, coiling, slab building; and there will be a basic introduction to throwing on the wheel. In addition, you will be given a good grounding in clay preparation, the working properties of clay, different clay bodies, and basic decorating and glazing techniques will be discussed. Works will be fired and glazed after the end of the course.
