Summer School – Pottery: Making Your Own Glaze 3D Campus

This course is aimed at potters with experience glazing using mixed glazes, but would like to begin creating their own glazes. Some Pottery experience is required.

What The Course is About:

This one day course will introduce you to the various materials required to make your own glaze and the technical application of the glaze to the fired clay. Glaze is a fundamental process of ceramics and gives the clay surface a huge range of colour and depth. Due to the many stages of making ceramics, glazing is often left to the last minute and does not get the full attention that is needed to achieve the required finish. The tutor will advise you on the uses of different glaze materials, but you will be expected to experiment and make tests that you can take home once they have been fired.

Materials Required:

You must have a mask rated FFP1 or 2 (you can buy one from us) to use the spray booth. Several portions of the course will require you to wear a mask. Please bring bisqueware or tiles you would like to glaze. If you do not have any some will be supplied. Paint brushes and a notebook are highly recommended.

Previous Experience:

Suitable for intermediate to advanced students.

End of course:

By the end of the course you will understand the difference between glossy, satin and dry glazes, onglaze and underglaze
