Summer School – 2 Days: Experimental Painterly Etching
Suitable for those who already have basic experience of etching who want to learn experimental and non-traditional etching techniques including using alternative grounds and resists to achieve fluid, painterly and tonal effects, exciting textures and expressive mark-making in their prints.
What The Course is About:
The course will explore experimental painterly etching approaches using alternative resists and grounds including White or Soap Ground, combined with other painterly etching techniques. Alternative resists and grounds allow acid to bite through them at varying speeds to produce fluid, painterly and tonal effects, particularly effective for achieving a range of textures and expressive mark making. You will experiment with new techniques alongside more traditional methods building your confidence to incorporate them into your prints.
Materials Required:
If you have a painting, drawing or image you’d like to refer to, or work from during the course, please bring it along. Please bring a selection of pencils 2H, HB, 2B, 6B and a sketchbook or notebook, and some basic paintbrushes. These materials can also be purchased from the school shop.
Etching can be messy so it’s a good idea to bring an apron, and rubber gloves are available from the School Shop.
Previous Experience:
This course is suitable for those with basic experience of etching, as well as more experienced students who want to either refresh or develop their skills. This is a practical workshop-based course where different experimental techniques will be demonstrated, and you will have a chance to put them into practice.
End of course:
On this course you will learn:
Methods of etching including resists, White or Soap Ground alongside more traditional techniques.
How to use these methods to achieve textural and painterly results.
How to combine different methods to achieve desired results.
Tutor input and support to discuss the use of different techniques in your work.
