What The Course is About:
The purpose of this course is to develop skills in book arts and support participants in creating their own identity as makers. To achieve this, we begin with a discovery process (of choice) that introduces the history, fundamentals, materials, context, and creative potential of either adhesive or non-adhesive bindings. We then move on to building practical skills, focusing on folding, sewing, gluing, cutting, and working confidently with tools and materials. This course will cover the following bookbinding techniques: Saddle stitch, Chain stitch, Back-to-back book, Japanese stab binding, concertina, and pocket book. Participants will learn how to make a hard-cover by doing concertina bound, fundamentals of bookbinding, tools and equipment, sewing, folding etc.
Materials Required:
What to bring to the first session: The course encourages experimentation, allowing each participant to explore their own style (often using their own prints) and approach within the traditions of bookbinding. Bring to the first class any prints or drawing & painting materials you possess; paper and further items can be purchased from the school shop. Tools will be provided.
