Summer School – 2 Days: Painterly Etching

Suitable for those who already have basic experience of etching who want to explore painterly etching techniques and experiment with gestural and expressive mark-making in their prints.

What The Course is About:

This is a practical workshop-based course where different techniques will be demonstrated, and you will have a chance to put them into practice, either to refresh your skills or develop new ones. The course will include painterly approaches to softground, sugarlift aquatint, and chine colle. You will experiment with different kinds of expressive and gestural mark making, combining different techniques to build up images in layers.

Materials Required:

If you have a painting, drawing or image you’d like to refer to, or work from during the course, please bring it along. Please bring a selection of pencils 2H, HB, 2B, 6B and a sketchbook or notebook. You will need some basic paintbrushes which can be purchased from the school shop. Etching can be messy so it’s a good idea to bring an apron, and rubber gloves are available from the School Shop.

How to combine different methods to achieve desired results. Tutor input and support to discuss the use of different techniques in your work.
