Summer School – En Plein Air: An Introduction to Outdoor Sketching and Painting

This course is designed to improve your skills and confidence in drawing and painting whilst enjoying the outdoors.

What The Course is About:

This one day intensive course is designed to build your confidence and practical skills for working en plein air (in the open air). We will explore how direct observation and immediate response can shape your painting practice.

Open to all levels, the course offers a mix of demonstration, guidance and experimentation. We will also explore form, pattern and texture and perspective. You will spend the day outside on-location sketching and painting around Putney and the River Thames.

We will start at PSAD in Studio 5 at 10am before walking to the shade of Wandsworth Park (there are toilets there by the church cafe) by the River. Bring plenty of water with you and a stool if you have one, although there are plenty of benches.

Materials Required:

What to bring to the first session: Basic drawing materials, A4 sketchbook, Watercolours and a range of brushes. Heavy watercolour paper (Bockingford 300gsm is very good and a large sheet can be bought from the PSAD shop and can be cut in two). Alternatively bring a watercolour block and a container for water.

You are also welcome to bring a small stool too.

Previous Experience:

All Levels

End of course:
